Eulino Novais forms part of the 45-member small-holder cooperative Coopiata in
Chapada Diamantina, Piatâ in the Bahia region of Brazil. He works hard along with
his family to produce stunning pulped natural coffee to send out to the world year
after year.

Brazil is the world’s largest producer of coffee, there is a lot to filter through when it
comes to finding a good coffee from a good relationship. It’s easy to find coffee in
Brazil; the difficulty is finding great coffee from the very hands of the passionate
people that cultivate and harvest it. Our goal was clear from the beginning: Work with
small-holder farmers who are producing differentiated coffees from outside the
typical spotlight regions in Brazil. Easier said than done.

We feel very fortunate to have been introduced to Renato Rodriguez and his
partners at Coopiata. The region of Chapada Diamantina is unique in Brazil, the
rugged landscape marked by high ridges and plateaus that interact both with the
bordering desert region to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The relatively
high elevation and seasonal dry air creates distinct daily high and low temperature
cycles that make for tasty and differentiated specialty coffee.

This is the second harvest we have imported from the producers of Coopiata into
New Zealand and we are excited for local coffee lovers to look at Brazil as the more
diverse origin that it is!
